Timber Treatment

At Suffolk Gates we offer a variety of timber treatments on our softwood gate and door products. However some gates are only suited to certain treatment types, but all the treatments that we use are proven leading brand treatments.

Hardwoods unlike softwood do not need any forms of treatment, however there are a variety of products that may be applied to maintain or change appearance if necessary. For information and advise on this please contact our sales team who will be able to give you sensible advise based on your requirements.

ACQ

ACQ is a treatment carried out in a treatment vessel where the chemical is forced into the timbers by means of pressure. This comes either green or brown as shown in the pictures below. This treatment is a very robust treatment and is only suited for use on field and entrance gates, some pedestrian and hand gates, and all ground contact posts.
(We do not recommend this treatment on any gates with tongue and groove boarding due to the excessive shrinkage in the timber after treatment).

Protim 265

Protim 265 is a clear treatment in colour as shown in the pictures below, and is not as robust as ACQ, making it more suited to joinery type work. There is less movement and shrinkage in the timbers after treatment, making it suited to use on any gates with tongue and groove boarding.
(Because Protim Vac is a clear treatment it is strongly advised that an oil or solvent based wood stain is applied to avoid discolouring and excessive expansion of the timbers).

Solvent and oil based stains

Any gates treated with Protim 265 treatment will require a minimum 3 coats of solvent or oil based wood stain to be applied. This is to prevent discolouring and to reduce excessive expansion of the timbers during the winter months.

We are able to provide this service at Suffolk Gates for a further minimal charge, or this can be left to you the customer. Through experience, we at Suffolk Gates prefer to use 'Sadolins Extra Durable' and 'Sadolins Classic' oil based wood stain, which is available in a variety of colours. You can see Sadolin Extra Durable Woodstain colours here, or Sadolin Classic Wood Protection colours here.

Our advice is to always start with a lighter colour, as shades will darken with further coats. Also if you wish for a change in colour, you will only be able to darken rather than lighten the appearance.
